After reading the article, “Re-Viewing Visual Literacy in the ‘Bain d’Images’ Era,” a few things come to mind. The world has changed immensely with the invention of technology as a means of creating art. In the first paragraph of the article the author states that “we live in an era of visual culture.” I find this to be true. As users of the internet, social media, and technology, we are constantly surrounded by images. While I agree with a lot of the points made by the author, I do believe they took more of a negative view of the idea. The author discussed the dangers of visual culture and the negative effects it brings. What I liked most about the article was the final point in the concluding paragraph that was made. The author states that the development of visual literacy will increase students' ability to comprehend and better understand today’s world. This is a skill that is now necessary for people of all ages to possess, even though many years ago this may not have been true.
I agree that being immersed in social media and images can be damaging to the mind. I see this in my own life with the flooding of posts that fill my phone each day. I believe it is most important that we understand this can be damaging, but to create skills and strategies to counter those effects.
